WHAT IS TILT CONTROL?
In poker you may have experienced a time when you were totally confused and angry at having lost a game. You could not understand how your opponent called when it was you who had a set at the flop but when you bet out after he called on the flop, he check raised another player all in at the turn. He had called with just a flush draw that he had hit at the river. You are still confused, as it was you who brought him to that point because that is what you had planned but what you had not thought of was that the situation would turn to his benefit. This is tilt!
Every player has gone through this moment sometime in his gaming career. It may have put you in a fit of extreme rage and you may have in this state of mind made bets on higher stakes in order to get back that lost money but to no avail. You cannot expect to win when you are playing with a confused mind. It is therefore essential that you let go of the anger within you or you will only be losing more money. Commonly tilts only call for more losses but there may be instances where players have managed to win back their money but such cases are rare to find. Tilt gives rise to a negative surge of feelings and it is necessary to control this if you wish to be a good poker player.

As we know tilt is but a burst of emotions that can be constrained in a way or the other. The best way to get relaxed is to leave the table and take a break. Free your head of the table and do some exercises to soothe your mind or get yourself a refreshing drink or just wind up for the day. The length of the break generally relies on the disposition of the player experiencing the tilt and the circumstances of the pots that turned against him. It could be that you are having a row of misfortune for days on end, maybe weeks. In such a condition it would be advisable to take a good long break and return to the table only when you are ready to fire it again because tilt can be quite a burden on your mind. Deep breathing exercises can also be very effective because they are proven to relax you mind when you are highly tensed. These exercises help clear your mind and allow you to focus on your game once again.
These techniques are good for use as an after-affect to tilt, but avoiding it from the beginning is what you should aim for. You must be able to think and play level-headedly and not allow emotions to rule your head. In poker, luck is but by chance and therefore good or bad luck will not last forever. However, it is your skill that will determine your wins and losses so do not let a few losses dishearten you and strain your mind. Think clearly, manage your bankroll well and you will find success as you continue to play ahead.
